Andzia's Amber is absolutely delighted to present the newest collection from Dorota Kos-- The DK Amber Mosaic Collection.
Kos says, about this special issue collection, "the mosaic I use in the jewelry is hand made, nothing pressed. Maybe it is crazy, but I really put together every small piece-- using glue, polishing again, cutting, assembling, measuring, polishing again... For this collection, I used many really different kinds of wood-- black oak, ebony, plum, cherry, apple tree, birch, walnut & padouk (red). Woods that I found, woods that I kept, woods that were given to me. So the wood is a mosaic in the same way the amber is a mosaic. It is fair to say that I am fascinated by the micro world. I hope you will enjoy that every small piece is unique & that, through my work as an artist, I respect every small piece of the amber & the wood."
The purity & integrity of Dorota's work & her materials, the quizzical combination of precisely organized chaos & her fidelity to process truly sets her work apart among contemporary amber jewelry designers. Amber & wood create small objects that are complete, whole & quite singular in their ability to amaze. Each is like an intense little fruit. Portable art. Lines are clean, even hard, with a modernist edge, yet it is here that the pieces confuse, because they are so very, very warm. Certain edges are left completely raw, like the snaggle tooth of an ancient cat.
This is inventive amber jewelry that pleases eye, spirit & hand. Yet is is somehow elusive, even sitting in the palm of the hand. It gestures towards our human past with remarkable fidelity to the long traditions of amber craftsmanship found in Gdansk, World Capital of Amber. Yet they also gesture towards an even older world, a lush, ancient one filled with exotic & rare materials, to which we cannot return & of which it is an artifact. Then again, these small, precious pieces point us towards the future, as if they are blueprints of what we may become.
Ultimately, the world the DK Amber Mosaics come from is our world, newly imagined. |
